Istanbul, previously known as Constantinople is the most populous city in Europe and by extension, in Turkey. It is an ancient city that was founded in the early seventh century by the Greeks. It was and still is important because of its strategic location along the historic Silk Road.

The eastern side of the city is located in Asia while the western part is located in Europe, making it the melting point of cultures and civilisations. Hence, Istanbul is known as the city of two continents. In addition, this trans-continental city connects the east and the west through the sea route that connects the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Over the years, Istanbul (Constantinople) has remained the capital city of three empires: the Roman Empire, the Ottoman Empire, and the Byzantine Empire. The Great City of Istanbul is a city in Turkey situated in the Marmara region, south of the Black Sea and the north of Marmara Sea that divides Europe from Asia. In addition, it is a sea port for the country of Turkey.
